Light commercial work

Alongside homes, we take on light commercial work across Wairarapa. Recent jobs include replacing the fascia on the turret of the Masson Implement building, with a cherry picker to reach the top safely, and an addition at Carterton Preschool.

Building consents and licensed builders

Most building work in New Zealand needs a building consent from the district council before it starts, and the law puts the responsibility on the owner: an owner intending to carry out building work must apply for a building consent before the work begins. Some low-risk work is exempt under Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004, but exempt work must still comply with the Building Code.

Design and building work on a home's primary structure or weathertightness that needs a building consent, or is part of a granny flat built under the granny flats exemption, is restricted building work, and the law says it must be carried out or supervised by a Licensed Building Practitioner. A homeowner working on their own home can apply to the council for an owner-builder exemption, except on a granny flat.

A consent is applied for to the council for the district the work is in. In the Wairarapa that is Masterton District Council, Carterton District Council or South Wairarapa District Council, each of which takes applications online.

Building and construction: common questions

Do you build for businesses as well as homeowners?

Yes. Most of our work is domestic, and we also take on light commercial construction across Wairarapa.

Are your builders qualified?

Yes. Our team includes five qualified builders, alongside a labourer and support staff.

Do you do insurance repair work?

Yes. We are contracted by two leading insurance companies for assessments, repairs and investigations.

Who applies for the building consent?

The law puts the duty on the owner, who must apply to the council before work begins. In practice the application is usually prepared with your designer and builder, so talk to us early about what your project needs.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across the Wairarapa and Tararua Region. See our contact page for every way to reach us.
